So I've been doing some research today and yesterday as to me getting my driving license. New Hampshire is good in the sense that you don't have to have a driver's permit first. I can in theory just go take my test at the DMV. BUT the DMV website says this:
Residence Status
Provide Social Security Identification Card and ONE of the following:
- Valid permanent resident card issued by the Bureau of Citizenship & Immigration Services (BCIS).
- Valid I-94 departure card indicating refugee status.
- Valid employment authorization card and proof of application for permanent residence status.
Driver License Status
- Provide valid out-of-state driver license, or
- Successfully complete and pass both a written and road test.
Residency
Provide ONE of the following, along with current address:
- Valid vehicle registration.
- Current gas bill in the applicant’s name.
- Current electric bill in the applicant’s name.
- Current water and sewer bill in the applicant’s name.
- NH resident hunting and/or fishing license in the applicant’s name.
OR
- Marriage certificate, civil union certificate or its equivalent and one of the above in the name of the spouse or civil union partner which is listed on the marriage certificate, civil union certificate or its equivalent.
Bring the required documents to:

Non-US Citizen Driver Licensing Office

Concord, NH 03305You may apply for a driver license ONLY at the Concord office.
So I am a bit confused because technically my license is an out of state one. I'd like to think that this would mean that I can just rock up to Concord with my documents, and they'll issue me a NH one, without taking a new driving test.... but this seems too easy, and I have gotten used to jumping through hoops.... so they are going to call me back and I can ask them some questions.
In the meantime this means that I am stuck at home again in theory. I thought initially I could drive on my UK one for a year, but now I have my permanent residence all approved I definitely can't drive without a license. And Concord is nearly an hour away, north of here. Urgh. So really I have to figure out how to get to Concord. Rusty was a bit funny about it, first not understanding why I had to go to Concord (I don't make the rules!) and then said initially well I'll take you, but then followed it up with "Well I am sure Patrick said I could take you, or he could take a holiday day and go up there, he does for anything else" which made me feel like a piece of shit. I spoke to her about it earlier and she said she didn't mean anything by it, but even so, I felt like it would be a huge inconvenience to her.
